What is SEEDS?
The Self Employment and Entrepreneur Development Society (SEEDS) is a business start up and development program dedicated to supporting the development of entrepreneurs and the growth of businesses in our community.
What qualifications are required to be admitted to the SEEDS EI sponsored Self- Employment Program?
- Must be a current EI claimant, or have been on EI sometime in the past three years, or had a parental EI claim sometime in the past 5 years.
- Must be currently unemployed.
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Must reside in the Lower Mainland.
- Must have a viable business idea.
- Must have the appropriate knowledge, skills and experience to operate the proposed business.
- Must be able to demonstrate a reasonable expectation of your ability to fund the business start up.
- Your business must be a new business to you.
What does the EI sponsored Self-Employment Program include?
- 10 weeks of business skills training
- Business advisor support
- Business plan development
- Business consultant support
- 48 weeks of financial support

How can I apply for the EI sponsored program?
You must attend an Information Session at SEEDS. Everything you need in order to apply will be available at the Information Session. For a schedule of current dates and times please call 604.590.4144. See Calendar of Events for group start dates.
How often does the EI sponsored Self-Employment Program run?
SEEDS holds 8 program groups per year including 2 Immigrant groups per year. For specific group start dates see Calendar of Events or for more information call 604.590.4144.
How much financial support will I receive in the EI sponsored program?
A total of $14,400.00. Successful applicants who will receive up to 48 weeks of financial support at the higher of their current rate of EI claim (until it runs out) or at a rate of $300 per week. After the current EI claim is completed, the rate will be at $300.00 per week until the completion of the 48 weeks.
Are there any costs to me for the EI sponsored Self-Employment Program?
No.
If I am not a current or a past EI claimant can I still qualify for the Self-Employment program?
Yes. Under certain circumstances those with disabilities, medical claims, or other extenuating circumstances can be considered for admission to the program. If you are not sure that you qualify come to an Information Session and ask to speak to one of our business advisors.
I already have a case manager at one of the Employment Centres. Can I still apply to SEEDS?
Yes you can. However it is recommended that you discuss this with your case manager and ask for a referral to SEEDS.
Can I apply to the EI sponsored SEEDS Self Employment program if my business will be a partnership?
Yes you can. However you must have the controlling interest in the partnership (51%) and you must complete a partnership agreement before completing the SEEDS program.
